From 5K Milestone to Urgent Recovery: Standing With Jamaica

Updated: 6 days ago

Our focus now shifts from celebration to relief — aiding the hardest-hit communities as we continue to build the MCIC legacy.

In the wake of what has been described as “devastation never seen before,” the Executive Body of STATHS ’78 & Friends, Inc. is responding with renewed urgency. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm, leaving entire communities displaced, roads blocked, infrastructure shattered. The United Nations

To meet this challenge, our association has made a deliberate decision: while we remain committed to the vision of the Medical, Counseling & Intervention Center (MCIC) at St. Andrew Technical High School, our immediate priority is relief and recovery. We will work through our trusted partner, the VM Foundation, and in collaboration with the STATHS International Partners Association (SIPA), to support the reopening of Belmont High School and to assist our alma mater’s, STATHS, faculty, students and families who have suffered loss.

We believe that wellness, education and resilience go hand in hand — and now more than ever, our students need stability, care and hope. By prioritizing relief first, we reinforce the mission behind MCIC: building strength before bricks; walking with purpose instead of just running for recognition.

We will keep our global community updated as the recovery unfolds and will continue to share how each step we take contributes to long-term support and impact.

Together, we walk for healing, we walk for home. Together, we walked miles apart but shared one mission — to be heroes for the next generation of STATHS students.

Thank you for your continued support, compassion, and dedication.

With gratitude and solidarity,

Claude Bryan

Chairman, STATHS ’78 & Friends, Inc.
